Dealer Airbag Service
The service manual for my '99 mentions having the airbag system checked by a dealer every so often. I'm due for such a checkup. However, I have a Durametric scanner, and it does some sort of checking of the airbag system. The Durametric shows no faults. Thus, is there any point having a dealer check the system? Is there anything extra special (other than taking $$$ from me) that the dealer would do that the Durametric doesn't do?

The service is certainly looking for codes (that the Durametric can do) but also manufactures are looking for signs of wear or abuse (you can do that too). I recall back in the early 90's Porsche stated the life cycle of an airbag could be as little as 10 years and recommended replacing them after that period. The normal vibration and chafing that can happen with everyday use was the concern.
Might have merit, may just be covering their butts.

From: Seattle - it's not Hell, but you can see it from here!
wouldn't worry about it.
you can't open an airbag to check for wear. they're just going to do what you can do, check for faults and say it's ok.
