He lucked out. Before installing a new engine, the shop installed the LN bearing retrofit kit, changed the oil and filter several times and the car is running fine after several thousand miles. Obviously there was alot of microscopic metal particles in the oil and filter and after each oil change they cut open and inspected the oil filter for metal particles. Apparently the car was shut off quickly when the "death rattle" occurred so the timing chains and gears had not gone too far astray.
