Default Oil recommendation for track use and Transaxle question

Howdy everyone. I took the plunge and purchased a 2001 Boxster / 986 in Speed Yellow. I will post pix soon...

Anyway what is the recommended oil for track days / DE's? I was thinking of running Mobil 1 15W-50.

And what is the recommended viscosity for the transaxle?

Thanks in advance.

Default Mobil 1 5w-50 might be better choice if its still ACEA compliant...

15W-50 is not, last bottle I looked at.

I would think the factory's recommendation for tranny/diff fluid would suffice.

I have no experience with my Porsche on track but over 215,000 of street driving the Porsche manual and diff fluids have done an admirable job of lubing tranny/diff.

Not sure what some super duper synthetic tranny or diff fluid would buy you.

Tracking would call for more frequent changes though regardless which fluid you chose.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Rob, we at Farnbacher Loles find that the factory recommended 0/40 or even the 10/40 is great for the water cooled motors.
I like the Mobil 1 or the Total oil. as for the trans only mobil 1 75/90 . the fancy (redline) oils are too slick for the Porsche trans and dont let the synchro slow down the gear, the trans gets very hot and the oil should be changed every 3 track weekends in mid summer.

I decided to try something a bit different, after reading some info from some other sites, I changed our 1998 2.5l engine oil with Royal Purple 5w-40.

Yes, going to go with RP 5W/40 too. I can get it at wholesale and I have had great success with their products on other cars. As to the Trans / Diff, going with SWEPCO 201. I can buy that for $46.00 from Zim's right here in the DFW area.

I agree w/ Spencer and have used the factory fill M1 0W-40 and have had no regrets.

In fact I heard today that the GT 2 911 RSR's racing at Sebring are using the same oil. If it's good enough for a multi million dollar race campaign it's good enough for me.

Read this, it could change your mind about both Mobil 1 and Royal Purple....

Well, it didn't change my mind about RP.
