Boxster shopper -- what is the "whine" we hear?

Greetings! We've test-driven new 2008 Boxsters twice now, and each time I notice a distinct "whine" that raises in pitch with engine RPM.
I enjoy the engine sound, but this is much higher pitched and I can best describe it as a whine. We did not hear it at all with the top down however -- just with the top up.
It seems like something that would take a while to get used to hearing.
Any comments as to what this might be?
TIA

maybe engine noise in the radio? I know in some aftermarket stereos, if the ground is not solid or have cheap cables, you will hear a whine through the speakers. I am not sure if this is what you are hearing.

Where in the car is the sound coming from? Also, if it's a 2008, it's actually a 987 Boxster. There's a lot of cross-reading (and the cars are similar), but if it's a 987-specific issue, the 987 forum might garner better responses.
I can't say I've ever noticed anything like that in my 04 Boxster S, although I did have an alternator in my old camaro that squealed something fierce. I've heard of similar issues simply from wet serpentine belts. If it varies with RPM, it's most likely something connected directly to the engine.

I have a 2004 Boxster with 19k miles. I also noticed the low rpm whine. Assuming we are talking about the same whine..... Its just the way the engine sounds at low rpm. My motor displays very different sound characteristics depending on the rpm/throttle position.
2000rpm-3000rpm Turbine-like whine
3000rpm to about 4500rpm Deeper moan
from there it grows into a whailing, growling shriek at redline.
I'm sure the exhaust sound is more prevalent at higher rpm and contributes more to the the cars sound; while at lower speeds the engine's whine is more noticable.

..the reason you hear it with the top up vs not with top down is that the folded top acts as an sound insulator. The motor sound is more pronounced because of it's proximity to the driver ans his/her ears.
The Boxster whine is a feature.
