Default Not for the faint of heart...my Boxster, a 550 SE was flatbedded today..

...it is the classic IMS failure on 64K miles car. Doubt that PCNA will be much help, but I'll call anyway.

I loved this car and now?? I will/must fix it, then probably get rid of it.

I really don't have the heart, money, nor inclination to continue the affair.

I'm considering a dismantler motor, if i can find one.

The car is a a great independent Porsche shop right now, but if PCNA is to help I'm sure they will insist I move it to a dealer to have him verify...just can't stand the thought of having my car half apart at a dealer and then PCNA denying to help...a real dilema.

This was my 3rd Boxster ('99,'02 2.7, also had an IMS failure under warranty and this one).

Dennis,
Really sorry... no REALLY SORRY to hear that. I hope PCNA steps up and does the right thing, especially to a repeat Porsche owner. Please keep us updated.

...Porsche dealer called PCNA and the rep said since my car was "within the post warranty threshold" (?)
PCNA should/would offer some accomadation.

Triple A agreed to relocate car to Autohaus Lancaster (not where i bought car but they seem really accomadating) about 40 miles away.

It's there now so we shall see...I'm hopeful, cautiously.

Intermediate shaft. It helps gear down/up (?) to drive the camshafts due to different speed required between crank and cams.

It has been an issue for all watercooled flat sixes...how much of an issue? only Porsche knows for sure. They do usually step up to the plate in some form or another even after warranty expires...at least for original owners.

well that is a huge bummer, good luck with PCNA, I don't know that I could deal with it if a second engine died the same way

I will et you know if PCNA does not come through to my satisfaction...

I will say this, the car's trade in value (running) is about $24-25K I know 'cause I was shopping around just prior to this bad luck.

A new motor, discounted by a a Porsche Florida dealer is about $11K plus core and shipping......so we can do some math.

....but I'm hoping PCNA will do me right!

Thank you for the explanation.

How do you detect it or notice it? I started getting some interesting noises from the vicinity of the engine, some sort of a high-pitch whine when I first start it up that lasts for about first 30-50 yards, and occasional soft cluck, when putting the car into 1st. These are too new for me to say they are consistent (heard it twice in 3 days), I am not sure what to make of them.

Thank you again.

...When IMSs go, it is not a gradual decline. i've had 2 and neither progressed from some small noises. They made noise and went within 30 seconds.
