Or once it starts that sound, it is toast.
Can you bring it back from the edge?

If u are thinking about putting in a 3.6 be prepared for lots of different issues with the electronics and some mechanical adjustments. My 3.6 with variocam plus went in almost 2 years ago. You will have to change many things, from memory there is a small plumbing rework from the 986 to the 996 motor up front where the radiators hoses come in/out. Then you will use the 986 power steering reservoir, the 996 fuel rails won't work without some customization or like me I had a custom fuel rail designed. You will have to shim the motor lower if you are using the stock engine cover. I did not b/c I built a custom engine cover that provided extra clearance for the higher intake manifold. These are just a few thing that happen when you spin the motor around 180 degrees. You will want the largest 986 headers you can find, obviously the 996 headers will be facing the wrong direction.
The big issue is electronics. The shop I used battled for months trying to get an updated DME to work. There are others around the country that have made it work with a 996 DME. I was told the instrument cluster, ignition system, DME, Antitheft system all had to be "coded" to match. We couldn't get that to work so we went after market. We also couldn't get a 996 wiring harness to fit and reach where it needed to reach for a Boxster layout. Then the shop started splicing in longer wire to reach different plugs and that caused electrical faults to trip the computer and the DME started spiting out codes. We ripped all that sh*t out and put in a Motec m800 engine management system and 100% custom Motec wiring harness. We pulled 60-80 pounds of wire out of the car by going with this harness.
The bottom line is, it can be done and it can be done a lot easier than I had it done. You have to check a shop who has done it, with stock parts, and speak with those customers who have had it completed to determine any issues. My car runs great but its a race car.

The shop you used didn't know what they were doing. If you know what you are doing it isn't that hard and you come out with a factory solution. I've done two 3.6 conversions into a '98 and a '99 the later cars are even easier.

Todds right,i'm waiting for exhaust work and an air intake and my 3.6 x51 conversion is done.pretty straight foward thanks to Todds directions on renntech. the later cars are much easier then the early cars.I'll be updating to a 996 instrument cluster over the winter.already installed the oil sender and wiring.

I would love to find the thread on the 3.6L conversion. I have seen the great document on the 3.4L conversion, but havent found a thread on the differences in detail that are associated with the 3.6L engine.

Todd,
You and I have spoke and I couldn't agree with you more! The mechanics I used and information I was give was sooooo bad that it made this convert an unbelievable nightmare. I wish I could turn back time and do it over with input from people like you and others who I have found since it was completed.
While my car is fun to drive and I love it, I wouldn't do it again without doing it with someone who has proven he has completed the convert before. So if you are out there looking to go the 3.6 route please take it from someone who spent nearly 24 months and tens of thousands of dollars, find someone like Todd who you can learn from and even pay a few thousand dollars to to make it happen.
