well we live in the age of instant and wordwide communication...and there have been almost 1/2 million of these M96 cars build...so if the problem is only 1 percent that's 5,000 motor issues out there.
There were issues in the Porsche family in the 50s,60s, 70s and 80s...the raw numbers weren't as big and we did not have the www.
As a 66 year old guy who lived in and experienced yesteryear, I assure you Porsche was not perfect.
Drive your car and stop fretting...that's what I do and if it breaks, i'll fix it. By the way NEW crate motors cost less than aircooled rebuilds...and they come complete.
Start chasing problems even in a 356 motor and see how $$$ add up.

Listen to Dennis,
I was paranoid as **** when I starting seeing all these IMS failures threads on the forums.....I drive a 01' 986 S with a 3.2L,perfect candidate to explode.
Then I figured, hey if it's gonna blow,I might as well give it a reason to.
I've seen 5 & 6k soo often lately without a hitch I've really developed a lot of trust in the car to where I'm not worried about a IMS failure.
Drive it hard and live like there is no tomorrow!

Next question, where can i go to get answers on all this stuff? I am thinking of buying a boxster and would probably do a conversion like this at some point in the near future and i want to buy the best platform for this.
The Rennlist boxster forum is a bit...welll just into pictures and what not. Not a ton of technical info here. Where do i go to get all the tech info on these conversions. I would be doing it myself but dont want to reinvent the wheel here and just want to follow the tired and true setup. I realize electronics are a big stumbling block, but mechanically i think i can handle everything.
Do most people run 996 intake manifolds or do they bolt on the boxster manifolds and ancillary stuff onto the 996 long block? I had always wondered this. Its always been said boxster and 996 engines are physically the same, with really only bore's being different. So that would lead me to believe that i could use all the boxster intake and engine mounts and so on and just use the carrera long block.
Any ideas on the above?
Also, Ive only just priced a new from Porsche 3.6L to come to $10,100 which includes the core charge. I dont know if 3.4L's are cheaper, if they are i may go that route, and could also go for a 3.8L or 3.6 x51 or something. Thats all price dependant but i just want to know what engines can be run in this chassis.
