Default Searching for a 2000+ Boxster

I currently own a 1986 928 in the infancy of restoration. Extremely fun project, but am looking for something to drive on a more regular basis and not ahve to worry about working on all the little things constantly. Leaning heavily towards a Boxter (still considering a BMW Z3). Any input on what to look for and also how big a difference is there between the regular and the S? I have also heard the difference between a 99 and 00 makes a difference. Looking for something in the 15-20K range? Thanks for any input.

The differences between the 99 and 00 base models are listed below. I should think you could find a nice base 00 boxster in the $20K range

1999 Base

2.5Litre engine 201 HP.

5 speed manual transmission, Tiptronic 5 speed optional.

Litronic headlights option.

Small storage compartment between engine compartment lid and the convertible top.

Larger & redesigned fuel tank and venting system including a fuel tank differential pressure sensor

Note: There were an unusually high number of catastrophic engine failures in 1997-early 1999 Boxster engines and these engines were often totally replaced very early (<first 10k miles)in their life. A replaced engine is not a bad thing in a Boxster as the Boxster is a car to be driven, not collected. A dealer should be able to tell if the car you are looking at has had its engine replaced if you give him the VIN. Reference

2000 Base

2.7Litre engine 217 HP (redline increased from 6700 to 7200)

5 speed manual transmission, Tiptronic 5 speed optional

Twin resonance induction on both 2.7 and 3.2Litre engines (new intake manifold with DME controlled flap).

S model introduced. 3.2Litre engine, increased valves sizes,.

ME7.2 Electronic Throttle System (eGas) on both 2.7 and 3.2Litre engines.

Warm up catalytic converters (now 4 converters total) for emissions on both 2.7 and 3.2Litre engines.

Gearing change on 4th and 5th gears in manual gearbox.

Tiptronic gearbox also revised to work with larger engines, temporary manual mode allowed even

while in Auto mode.

Trans-fluid to water heat exchanger added.

Suspension changes (shocks, sway bars, springs).

Manual seat height adjustment standard.

Lighted vanity mirrors standard.

There were significant improvements made for the 2000 model year.
I'm sure you could find a 2000 base Boxster for the price you mentioned and may even find an "S" with a little luck.

The 01 Boxster S in the Rennlist classifieds looks pretty nice. Priced at under $22k but seller says he's 'motivated'.

What wasn't noted was that, imho, the small interior upgrades of the MY2000 make a nice improvement. Lots of Non-S cars in that range.. Likely a bunch of Ss too, but maybe at higher miles.

Hell you can find a decent S in the 20K range. I bought my 01S a few months ago with 54K for only 21K. I've seen several recently for sub-20K.
