Default Best Place for an Extra Key

Hi folks,
As you can see from my avatar I'm visiting here from the 993 board. My coworker bought a 2001 986 with one key. I didn't see much from searching - any particularly cheap options for him to get a replacement and get it programmed? I assume it has an immobilizer of some sort....

Also - is there a way to program it yourself if you have one of the keys? I've seen this on some other makes of cars.

Thanks. Lovely board you have here!

Default Key

I purchase a Boxster with just one key. I had to take my title to the Porsche dealer to have a key cut based on the vin number. No other local key shops will touch these keys.

Programing had to be done at the dealer too. They will do the orginal key and the new key. Both will need to be programmed again.

Very costly $225.

I had only one key, did not want to be stranded.

Ugh. thanks for the info. Thank goodness I got a 95 993 which doesn't have any type of immobilizer.
