i get anywhere from 21-24mpg combined on my 2000 S, guess I need to change my driving habits and slow down closer to the limit. might get run over though, but it would be nice to save some gas.

Reading these posts, it's clear gas mileage is dependent on how aggressively you drive--which is true for any other car, as well.
The message is you can get exceptional gas mileage--beyond the EPA numbers--if you drive your Boxster conservatively: stick to speed limits and don't push the rpms. It's a tradeoff--like a lot of things in life.

27-28.5 mpg steady state@70 or below flat terrain on cruise
19 on Hwy 128 to mendocino from the bay area in northern calif[ what a great road for a convert, but be carfull on the Boonville straight and near the Navarro bridge- JohnLaw].

I must have a heavy foot, I've never seen 20MPG in Atlanta suburban traffic, either with the original 2.5 or the 3.4. In fact around town I didn't see any change in mileage when I switched engines. HWY get about 28.

I got 35 mpg again on another 300 mi round trip to the mountains. Mostly highway, top up, no ac, 60-65. Maybe 20% of the trip on backroads with top down, 45-50 mph. I estimate 38 mpg pure highway at 60-65 mph. No mileage penalty going up to 80 mph in spurts, from the on-board computer. That's a European car for you.
In the suburbs, my mileage depends on the number of short trips and cold starts. From the mpg computer, cold starts are the killer. Once the engine is warmed up, you are 25-26 mpg around town.
Repeated short trips--3-4 miles--with cold starts gets you closer to 20-22 mpg. But that's usually mixed with longer travel, so it averages out to 26 mpg or so. The mileage could be much better if they could "heat up" a cold engine faster, or run it cold more fuel efficient.
The EPA numbers of 20/29 for my car are very conservative--especially on the highway. Maybe the 20/29 are for more aggressive driving. I don't go much above 3000 rpm. You don't have to to enjoy this car. This isn't like my old SC, where you had to flex the engine to 4000 rpm or so to keep it healthy.
