Going to check out a car tomorrow
I am going to look at a 2001 S tomorrow. I am driving 11 hours round trip and I plan on going to WV and driving back the same day. Carfax and service look good. I am going to print out some things to look for as I will not be taking it for a PPI. Closest place is 1.5 hours away. I am excited. I will post up photos on Sunday if I put a deposit on the car.

in my experience, and opionion, carfax isn't worth the paper it is printed on. for fun, i carfaxed my own car --which had an accident 2 years ago (that i reported myself)-- and it did not appear on the carfax.
in anycase, good luck with the car tomorrow.

I also called the dealers that serviced the car and got all of the service records. Nothing abnormal. RMS done at 20k and ignition switch done a little later. Then all the scheduled stuff.

Ask for a DME report for over revs. There are 6 ranges, and incidets in range 4 or higher are likely to have caused engine damage. Don't be alarmed if you see range 1 incidents because they are triggered by the rev limiter, and will not cause engine damage.

Good luck with the purchase and the drive back

What do you need to get the records from the dealer? I'm thinking about a car that is in Las Vegas. I have the VIN. Could I just go to the local Porsche dealer and ask them? Or do I need to have the owner do it?

It comes in pages off of their system, and looks like this:
Great source of warranty service data on a car.
Non warranty service data is only stored at the local dealership where the work was performed - so for that you have to call that specific service department with the same authorization deal etc etc...

Thanks guys. I got the Carfax and it shows where it was sold and that it stayed in that area. So, I'll call the dealer tomorrow.
On my Boxster S, it came with full leather. I can check the code later. But, yes, the entire dash, airbag box, swoosh over the gauges, and the door panels, and parts of the center section are covered in leather. IMHO it makes a HUGE difference in the total feel and quality of the car. There is no plastic feeling at all. In fact, I'm not sure I'd ever have purchased a Boxster if it was not for the full leather.

I should add that the funny thing is that I'm the first person to complain about others complaining about Porsche interiors and radios. I always say if the company is going to get $60k from you to spend on building your car, if you value engineering more than interior, get the Porsche, if you value interior more, get a Mercedes. That's the deal. I'd rather have them put the money to the drivetrain. That said, of course, I paid more for the nicer interior.
