Talking Boxster S 2003

Hi everybody. Today is a great day!
This is my first post and I´ve just received my new 2003 Boxster S.
One quick question which is bugging me a lot:
my dealer has offered me to change my current exhaust with the previous 2002 sports exhaust model, stating that it will sound much "deeper" that the current one. I thought the new 2003 exhaust was highly improved???? Should I change it or leave as it is?

Would really appreciate any comments.

The 2003 exhaust is way deeper than the 2002. Not louder, but deeper. The sport exhaust is louder and deeper. I say leave the standard exhaust on at least 5000 miles, then change it if you wish.

I may be out of line, here, but I suspect that your dealership may just have a waiting list of pre-2003 Boxster owners looking for the new 2003 exhaust, and they'd probably be absolutely delighted if you'd take them up on their most generous offer (or are they planning to charge you for the swap?). The 2003 986 exhaust has been hyped a bit as one of the features of their update for the new model year. Apparently it gives the car a more aggressive growl than the standard pre-2003 version.

I wish someone would take some sonic graphs or whatever they are called of these exhausts, record some wav files and post them, etc. etc. You hear all the time that this exhaust or that exhaust is better, yet without any real proof. For all we know the 2003 S exhaust sounds identical to the 2002.

Besides if you install a new intake, you won't hear your exhaust anyway...

Thanks for the replies.
Well, my dealer is charging me 1,100 Euros for the 2002 exhaust. So, right now I feel like a complete idiot. I´m calling them right now to cancel the 2002 exhaust.

Many thanks.

AndrewR,

That price is actually a decent price for the sports exhaust (which is the same for 2003, only the stock exhaust has changed). If you like the look or sound of the sports exhaust better than the factory 2003 exhaust then go ahead and get the sports exhaust, you will just want to keep the 2003 exhaust that they take off and sell it on Ebay or something so that you get something out of it as opposed to the dealer.

Forgot to mention, retail on the sport exhaust is about $1500, although some places charge less, so $1100 or so isn't bad.

Thanks Ken

I think I will keep the 2003 exhaust because to me it looks better (larger tail pipes), save some money, and see how it sounds. I'll compare it side by side with a 2002 sports exhaust, and if it sounds much better, then that could be the only reason to change it.

In any case, I've also heard that a new 2003 sports exhaust will be out soon. So, I will wait for a while and see what comes out.
What p#$$#$ me off, is that my dealer has no idea about anything, it´s the same old story. What they want is for you to spend money, money, money... they don´t care if you purchase a 2002 sports-exhaust system when "possibly" an new one is about to be introduced. Sorry, I just had to vent a bit.

AndrewR, good for you for actually looking into this before it was too late!

Good call on keeping the 2003 system, IMO. As John Murray said, and you reiterated, you can always switch it later if it isn't up to snuff for you.

I still think that they might have been eyeing that 2003 exhaust for their own use or to re-sell, but i guess we'll never know.

Congrats on your purchase and enjoy your new toy!

Andrew, let's see some pics of your car, you can create a free photo album using this site by going to the photo section of this site (just click on this link)

I see you are in Madrid. I have spent some time a few years ago there and in the South of Spain. One of my favorite places was La Bobadilla in the Andalusian hills no too far from Granada. That place has over a 1000 acres to be explored on horse back plus so much more. To think most people who visit the South of Spain rush to the Costa del Sol which to me is no more interesting than Miami with all of it's high rises, etc. You are a lucky man to live in such a beautiful country. What a great place to enjoy a topless car like the Boxster. Take care,

Thanks guys, really appreciate your support. Just one day to go!
I'll take some pictures this weekend and I'll post them so that everybody can see them. Just praying for a sunny weekend!

Scott, I can see you enjoyed your stay in Spain, I'm glad. Actually, Granada is one of my favorite cities in Spain. Like you say, it´s great country to have a topless car due to the great weather. Thanks for your comments.
Andrew.

IMHO I would find a car with the sport exhaust and hear in the real world what you think. Having done an exhaust change on another vehicle I found that after 6 months it was too loud and the new had really worn off. My 2001 S sounds just right for a car I drive almost every day. Trust me I wanted to change it but remembered a lesson learned the hard way.

Thumbs up

Beautiful car. Congrats on your purchase.

Your pictures raise another question. What is the deal with all the pictures, not just yours, but with hiding the license plate. As often as my car is parked in public, I don't hide the license plates and my identity and the cars that I own are a matter of public record, it appears that I must be missing something.
