Suncoast/Rennlist Boxster S Wins SCCA Divisionals
The Suncoast Porsche autocross team scored two class victories and overall Fast Time of Day (FTD) at the Sports Car Club of America's Southeast Divisional Championship event, held May 4-5 at Buckingham Park in Ft. Myers. Danny Shields won the A Street Prepared class and overall FTD driving the Suncoast Porsche Boxster S, while C. J. Spencer drove the Boxster to a narrow win over the Suncoast 944S2 of Sharron Shields in ASP Ladies.
The overall victory was notable, since FTD honors typically go to race prepared or purpose-built single seat Modified cars, not street-driven sports cars. The Ft. Myers field included former IMSA GT Champion "Fast Phil" Currin in his championship-winning Corvette, as well as former SCCA D Modified champ Harold Knobel in a Honda mod car, but Shields turned the quickest times both days. The Suncoast Boxster is a stock "S" except for its ROW 030 suspension package, Tequipment exhaust, and alignment by Carlos at Suncoast Porsche.
In winning ASP, Shields defeated the Corvette Z06 of Atlanta's Lindsey Lowe, and the Porsche 944 Turbo of two-time SCCA National Champion David Schnoerr. Schnoerr encountered problems with his Porsche Saturday, and borrowed a Corvette for Sunday, but was unable to move up in the standings.
The ASP Ladies contest saw the lead traded between Spencer and Sharron Shields repeatedly, before Spencer clinched the trophy with a blazing final run Sunday. The class ran in the final group, as temperatures soared into the mid 90s.
A 125-car field, from as far away as Tennessee and the Carolinas, took part in the first Divisional held in Florida since 1998. The event was a joint effort between SCCA and Gulf Coast Auto Crossers, Ltd.
The Suncoast team will be back in action May 26 at the Porsche Club of America's ZoneFest event to be held at Zephyrhills Airport north of Tampa.
