Cool Help - Tire choices

I have a '00 Boxster and I have to replace my rear tires. The fronts are Continentals. I have 17" rims. I have decided to stay with Continentals but I am not sure which model to get. The fronts are ContiSportContact.
I live in Southern California, where it rarely rains. However, I travel to Mammoth during the winter months to ski (approx. twice a month).
I have been told that it is difficult to fit this car with snow chains/cables. Therefore, I am thinking of getting the new Continental ContiExtremeContact tires. Has anyone had experience with this tire or does anyone have any suggestions on a tire package. Also, does anyone have any suggestions about going with a smaller footprint (I currently have 255/40 tires).
Please advise. Thank you in advance for your help.
