saw your post on the mods list. Unfortunately, the Boxster is too new a model to have many people risking their warranty in an unproven (M96) platform. Most experience with this platform, which is in the Boxster and non-turbo 996 has not shown promise for engine mods. These motors don't seem to do well with forced induction.
Finding a stock Boxster for 30K is tough, and adding the mods puts the car way outta the price range. There is a supercharger available, but there have been quite a few blown motors with it, and the manufacturer (TPC) also can rebuild and bore the motor.
However, for your friends price range, he'd be MUCH better with a MKIV Supra TT or a worked C4 Vette. He needs to get over the image stuff and be a "car guy". The Boxster is a great handling car and it is reasonably quick, but it is by no means Porsche's answer to those questing for muscle at a good price. The Boxsters best attributes are phenominal, neutral handling and superb braking and a blast to drive. It's awesome for autocross and very forgiving for those who might get in over their head being inexperienced drivers trying to push a 911, Vette or Supra Turbo.
Tell your friend, truthfully, that most of us with Boxsters didn't buy with the expectation of great straight line speed. Oh, and another option, if he wants exclusivity, would be an older NSX, adding a supercharger for cheap, and for 25-35 grand have a 300+ hp beautiful, reliable fast car.
