Post Cable shift mechanism from VW still used?

Been thinking of getting a Boxster and just finished reading the "Porsche Boxster" book by John Lamm. In there are some reviews stating that the shifting is loose, and I attribute that to the VW cable shift mechanism. Is that still used? If not, what year did the shifting mechanism change, and is it better now than on early Boxsters?
(Hi Brian!)
Thanks,
