Moving from 944 to Boxster: Do I want an "S"?

I do wonder about the motives of non-Boxster owners,from some of their statements, it leads me to believe they havent driven an "S".
I am a non-Boxster owner but I do drive an S, a 993 C4 "S". My motives are simple. As you prefer the looks and driving experience of the Boxster, I prefer the looks and driving experience of the 993.

adacab911,Your reason for choosing a 993 driving experience is totally understandable,its a great car.When i see non-Boxster owners bash and make negative comments,some that arent true,makes me wonder about there motives.

As one of the few people that is lucky enough to have both a 944 turbo and a Boxster S let me toss my two cents in again. The 944 turbo is a great car, sure it's old enough to be a senior in high school but it's still a great car which says a lot about Porsche and their engineers (probably one of the reasons a lot of folks are so passionate about theirs). Sure you could get a decent 944 turbo, do a few mods, and be the fastest thing on the block for around 15 to 17K. And for "kick you in the pants" acceleration there's nothing quite like a well-modded turbo car running a decent amount of boost. And when a well-modded 944 turbo is on boost, it accelerates something fierce. But those cars (including the 944 turbo) are pretty weak off the line and kinda doggy until you get on the boost. And yes the 944 with a few suspension mods will outcorner just about every other car out there. But - after you get done with all that it's a completely different animal than we it first came out. I personally love my turbo, but some folks think the exhaust and turbo are too loud, ride is too stiff, neck snap when the turbo hits is too much, etc... The S still has plenty of power, more low end torque, is better to drive around town, has just the right amount of exhaust note, and is great to drive on trips, around town, etc... And the S is no slouch - it will get up and move quite well. Plus everyone wants to ride in my S - especially on a sunny day. The 944 scares some folks, but EVERYONE wants to drive the S.
I guess the way I view it is this - my 944 is a specialty car now. All go, less comfort. Yes, it's completely reliable, I've driven at 120+ for 30 minute stretches, and all the power accessories still work, but it's not for everyone. The S is a great combination of comfort, power, and ability. It's a Porsche just about anyone can love and appreciate.
I guess the way I view it is this - my 944 is a specialty car now. All go, less comfort. Yes, it's completely reliable, I've driven at 120+ for 30 minute stretches, and all the power accessories still work, but it's not for everyone. The S is a great combination of comfort, power, and ability. It's a Porsche just about anyone can love and appreciate.

So many interesting views on these two very different cars.
I've been on these boards since the days when they were called "Porschephiles," that is, when the Boxster was still a concept car that hadn't entered production yet.
I haven't had the opportunity to drive a Boxster and I've seen great reviews on them both in the motoring press and the owner reports in Panorama, but from years of reading comments like Dwayne's on the 944 turbo, I didn't see the need to spend that amount of money on a Boxster when a 951 delivers so much.
However, I am privileged in that I own one of those rare examples of the evolutionary link between the 944 and the Boxster. A 250 HP 951 cabrio.
