Post Engine Seal Issue in Boxsters??

Guys,
Serious issie here No bashing intended..

I have talked to Friend who is a 2000 2.7 Boxster owner and 944 Spec racer. I asked him if he had his Boxster around and he said NO. Engine was being resealed. Also said another boxster S owner had to have his engine replaced because of it.

This is big boxster engine problem?

I would consider getting a used on in a few years when the prices get much lower, but would hate to then have to replace the engine.

Is there quiet recall by the factory? Do you think all effected units would be replaced in 5 years??

Thanks for the info guys!

I am not 100 percent positive on this one, but i think the issue was addressed in the late 2001 model Boxster.
My girlfriend had a 98 boxster that had the seal problem. It was fixed before her ownership. When she sold it, the problem hadn't flared up again. Her late-model 2001 was driven for 17,000 miles without a single problem (except bald tires from parking lot donuts and a burnt clutch at 7,000 from racing a little too much!).
(The reason I say WAS is because the 2001 rests in pieces from a high-speed collision)

Porsche: there is no substitute.

There have been a number of Rear Main Seal problems reported. Rumor is that Porsche has come out with the latest "new" seal to fix the problem. I for one do not know anyone with the problem, but I have heard tell of some.

It is hard to tell how prevalent the problem is because only those with problems even mention it.

Again, the rumor is that engines only need to be replaced if there are structural causes for the leak.

My warranty runs out this winter. I am considering an extended warranty to protect against a major problem.

Yes.. The oil cooler seals in the 944 can leak and cause coolant and oil mixing. This can tear up the bearings if not fixed.

Problem is that these cars used an oil cooler that uses the engine water as cooling for the oil. The cooler is mounted just outside the block in a coolant bath. There some small seals on the oil cooler that allow oil to flow into it. If these leak then you get oil in coolant. If the get really bad then coolant goes in the oil and it gets to the bearings.

I had 87 924S and I had this problem back in 91 timeframe. The dealer fixed it for free under a silent warrenty plan. It is a problem all 944 and 951 owners need to keep an eye on. There are some updates to parts, but best thing is to keep an eye one the coolant tank and look for oil and to look for coolant in the oil. Job is not super hard, but figure 1 full day.

Thanks for the info on the Boxster issues. I guess as more people, but more miles on the cars we will begin to determine if there is real trend.

Thanks, M758.

Never had that problem myself, fortunately, but I heard it exists.

At 7000mi mine had the rear seal replaced under warranty. Today it has a little over 47000mi and it's fine. Seems like if it is going to leak it will happen soon... <img src="graemlins/wave.gif" border="0" alt="[byebye]" />
