Why does this question keep popping up? It's stupid.

The Boxster is a brand new car. It may not be as fast as a 951S, but it's a newer (by far) car.

It's also at LEAST 3-4x as much to purchase.

There is no arguement to be had here.

I had 10k, and I nabbed a great 951. If I had 40k, I'd nab a great 911. End of story! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Why do you 944 owners (and variants) keep asking this question? 986 owners don't! That's what's stupid!

What kind of response do you expect from the 986 section anyhow!!!

The thing is craigg there intent or not but the 550 looks nothing like a boxster. The boxster name came from the engine layout. The 986 is far from repating the looks of the wheel wells or the interior. The front end doesnt have any the same styling. The back of boxster is the only similarity with the smooth rounding rear end that is placed slightly lower then the tail lights. I mean it is supposta be the new 550 but it really doenst carry to much as far as the look over. I also would like to point out to rich sandor that we are not compareing the 944turbo vs a boxster.

Whatever.

You are welcome to your opinion on the styling but you better read some 986 literature, my friend, rather than spouting unsubstantiated remarks.

This mindless babble about the name of the car (of COURSE it refers to the engine - the 550's was a boxer engine design too, as was the 356 and the 911! Jeez, it's a Porsche after all ) and the basis for the styling is getting silly.

Clearly you are a 944 owner who wants to find a place where someone on the 986 section of Rennlist will say they prefer the 944 over the Boxster. That was your opening question, after all.

I really can't imagine why they would. I drive a 911 AND a Boxster S and love my Boxster. Try it for real - you might too.

If someone can't afford a Boxster yet, hang on - they'll be in your price range in a few years. All cars depreciate.

No I am not saying the 944 is a better car (DUH there bother super nice porsches after all) I am just out to see what others opions are. Of course the boxster is a newer car and has its advantages and so does the 944. That is the real point here is to see what people think about both cars and see how they decided to belive there opinion. Both cars has there appeal. The idea of the post is just to see why the car appels to the owner. I personly find the boxster to be an alsome car but some things that I point out I like better on the 944, This might not be the case for you. I am not here to argue the orgins of the 986 it clearly came from the 550 spyder, I just question if it could have had a more clear relationship in styling to its older sibling.

When comparing convertibles(apples to apples),

i feel that the 944 doesn't look as balanced in the rear(i.e. it looks better as a coupe).

however, some might say the boxster's mid section seems to go one for ever(obviously due to mid engine placement).

either way, why argue over boxster vs. 951 etc, just enjoy your ride.

peace

CarFan, to each his own, but when comparing the 944 coupe to the cabriolet, the cab is widely recognized as the better looking car that has aged less in the design department than the hardtop version.

Why is it that Porsche people argue so much. At least a few on these boards. I personally like the looks of the 951 (S2) body style over the Boxster.

Boxster guys don't accept 944 guys. 928 guys don't accept rear engine guys. 996 guys don't accept Boxster guys. 993 guys don't accept anyone. TT guys don't accept C4 guys. It's silly.

Its because every porsche car brings something else to the table, Also everyone has there favorite car, The 993-930 guys have there reasons aircooled lots of oversteer, the 928 guys do to, the 996 guys are confuesed about how a 911 should be built. The boxster guys need to face reality that the 968 has already got the same resale and 951S and 944s2 cabriolet are close at hand. The 944 and 968 guys are the best! (hehe biased post)

You never mentioned the Cayenne - that oughta really get people polarized...

Say, how come you 944/951 guys spend so much time over here anyways? I NEVER read posts from 986 guys on your board. I guess the Boxster folks don't have so many things to discuss getting fixed... yet.

Porsche enthusiasts enjoy learning about, driving, and perhaps owning different Porsche models. Lots of Porsche enthusiasts will own different models - sometimes as many as possible.

Then there are the model specific enthusiasts. These would include the 911 guys who think only an air-cooled 911 is a "real Porsche." Everything else is second class.

I don't really get the squabbling. Learning about the different models, comparing and contrasting, etc. is fun. But a lot of people get off on knocking other people's cars, and that's just boorish. I guess it is an ego / self-esteem thing.

Re: the 986 & 550, some people also draw the comparison to the 718 RSK, also mid-engined. I hope that Bob Chapman does not mind me posting his work here...

The thing is, the Boxster is so much BIGGER than the original 550' sand RSK's.

The 97's small engine would have been phenominal had it been in a body the size of a 550!!

Granted, for it to be much smaller it would have to loose the soft top, and thus loose it's ability to be a daily driver in rainy weather, and consequently a serious drop in sales - But still, a Spyder Boxster would be cool.
