Post I´ve a 3.4L Powered Boxster since Sept. 2000. Here´s a review.

Since 98 I had a Boxster with a 2.5Turbo engine on it. At the time the upgrade was made by T.T.P(Turbo Technic Pietz) ex-Lotec, a Germany company that some of you might know. It had intercooler a KKK turbo and it was claimed to have 300Hp. It had an amazing power and from 3000 to 6000rpm the turbo kick was very strong. It was running with 0.6psi max pressure. In July 2000 after 25000Mls with the turbo kit, the engine blew. I had the options of put a stock 2.5L Engine vs rebuild 2.5 Turbo vs install a 3.4L from the 996. Well the 3.4L was my choise.

The 3.4L engine seemed as fast as with the turbo although the power deliver is dif. The 3.4 pulls very strong from low rpm (1500)untill it reaches the 7000rpm and the turbo engine was everything between 3000 and 6000rpm but after that it could bread anymore. Since Sept 2000 I didn´t had one single problem, car run with no flows, just like a stock factory Porsche Boxster, but for the last couple of weeks I´ve been feeling some exitation from the engine between 4500 and 5000rpm at full accelaration. Think this is caused by the BMC filter, maybe I´ll need a new air flow sensor(MAF).
The installation was a two days and a half job, it was made by PSI Motorsport(they have two cars running on 996 GT3 Europe Championship). The engine was brand new and it was necessary a new exhaust system, new gearbox mounts to lower the engine position, the ECU from the 3.4Liter engine sport air filter and some other minor mods.

As I said before the car has been vey reliable, and after driving my friends 98 Carrera cabrio 2, my car feels faster, manely at low rpm and this is due to weight dif between both cars. Max top speed achieved was 275 at 7000 rpm with 5 speed, when I was coming back from Germany, the engine was still asking for more, but I didn´t passed the 7000rpm.

Mantainace can be made by any official Porsche dealer, which is a must for a tuned car. As all the parts of the upgrade are Porsche parts(apart from the engine mounts), no problems in keeping the car at your dealer.

Just one last information for those who wants to make this upgrade. This engine match perfectly the Boxster chassi, car is now a dream to drive, but you have to know what you have in your hands, if you go to circuit playing lap after lap at full speed during all the afternon, well your 5 speed gearbox may be damaged resulting in an expensive repair. The brakes for everyday use and some track events are more than capable, but if you want to track this car more siriously, you´ll have to make an upgrade in this area.

Here´s near top speed achieved with the 3.4L when I was coming from Germany. Note the full gas tank, it can go further.

Here´s the full speed with turbo engine. Note the car is making 271Kph at more rpm than with 272Kph on 3.4L engine.

Here´s my new 03 rear tail lights.

170MPH in a Boxster!!! Awesome....I think the 3.4 option is best, NA all the way without the reliability issues.

I want one!

Thanks for the 2 year update on 3.4L conversion. I am contemplating the same and your feedback was very very valuable.

I have two questions:
1. How is it running now after 4 years? Any issues at all?
2. You said that the 5-speed gear box might get damaged under heavy track use. I do not track my car but am still concerned about possible damage to gear box. Can the gear box be modified too to remove the chance of damage?

this is why the 3.4 liter conversion is so popular versus supercharging turbocharging.

in the long run, the additional (?) cost will be paid back in spades by much increased reliability.

that said, i wonder when someone will put a Mk2 GT3 engine into a boxster... muwhahah

i think gemballa is working on it.

I've heard that in order to fit the bigger engine on some Boxsters they had to get rid of the rag top (and mechanism). Do you know if this is the case with the Gemballa? I guess you still have the hardtop but you just have to check the weather forecasts so you don't get caught in a sudden rainshower.

If it were me though I would pass on the aerokit -- just the engine upgrade. That way I'll have a stealth Boxster beast!
