1.) How much storage space is there really in the trunks?

I think that has been covered. Just keep in mind the rear trunk gets really hot.

2.) What year is the best for the price?

I would not look any earlier than 2003. Lots of improvements, biggest in my book is the glass rear window.

3.) Do I need the extra power of the S? I drove a 205hp car and thought I could use at least 50 more hp.

Are you going to track it? When I got mine I went for the non-S, big price difference new and no plan to track it.

4.) Differences between the S and the non-S?

Obvious is HP. You can get a non-S with lots of stuff. I have sports suspension, sports package (interior), sport seats (comfy) and 18 in sport design wheels.

5.) Is a base 987 within reach?

Brother-in-law's GF just got an '06 non S, manual w/ lots of goodies 8K miles for $35K.

Good luck
