Default 1998 Boxster Key

I have only one key for my Boxster. I went to a local Porsche parts counter. I had a copy of my title, drivers license and several $100's to spend on key cost.

They did not have them in stock. The key came cut.

I got the key from the dealer and it will fit in the door lock, but not turn.

What is the possibility that the key was cut wrong? The key was sent to the dealership already cut.

Any ideas on how the problem can be solved?

That is called a stipulated key. Comes with a little plastic cap on it. I bought one years ago and it would open my door.

A stipulated key is cut based on your VIN. Make sure your VIN was written down correctly. Compare it to your other key.

Default Key

Well based on your information. They cut the key wrong. The key would go in, but not turn. I gave the dealership a copy of the title.

Thanks

Why did they not copy the key you already had?

I can tell you what happened in my case.

I later found out my dealer had the machine to copy a key but the parts guys do not want to use it.

A stipulated key is cut at the parts wearhouse based on the VIN and then shipped to the dealer. My key fit.

Ok here I can help. I happen to be the parts manager for a Porsche dealer, and have faced this situation within the last week.
Stipulated keys are indeed cut by vin. however the key is only as good as the person who cut it.
I ordered a key for a Boxster in our shop, by vin. When it came, there there were very minor differences in the cut. The key worked the door, but not the ignition. (it wouldn't turn). I had to order another key. As far as the key cutting machine. we have one. I can duplicate most Porsche keys, however, some keys are just plain inpossoble to duplicate on it. If we were talking about a 99 cent blank, it would be worth it to try, but at the cost of the blanks from Porsche, I'd rather not gamble!

So, how about a picture of that fancy key cutting machine that the parts people do not want to use.

When I found out my local dealer had one I wanted to take a picture of it. I could see it way behind the front parts counter, gathering dust, but they were not thrilled about my request to take a picture.

My stipulated key, and the valet cap I had to buy with the chip in in.

A pic that I can show the guys behind the parts counter to see if they recognize it.

Then maybe another pic of someone actually using it so I can embarrass them.
