Default Info needed on conversion to 996 engine?

Is this a good bang for the buck as far as power/performance gains?
What is needed?
Expected cost?
What year and type of engine is the best for a 99 Boxster?

Without a core in exchange most used engines I have seen are between $6-7k. If you wait a few weeks the 3.4 I am pulling out to stick the 3.6 in will be available pretty reasonably.
The only other big ticket items you need are the DME reflash to run the 996 engine (~$1000-1500) and a proper exhaust (headers, cats, muffler) around $2-4k depeding on what you do. Not absolutely necessary is the addition of the front center rad, but I would highly recommend it, the factory parts to add it are cheap ~$400, but you need to either cut a hole in the center a la Boxster S or get a different bumper cover.

I just finished a 3.4 conversion in my 00 box. its a real kick in the ***, to put it mildly. It feels faster, but above 4k rpm it just rockets. I got a used 2001 3.4 from a wreck with 31k miles, paid 7k.

BTW, thanks for the help Oak, I read all your threads on this, and the info helped a lot.

This conversion is WAYYYYY worth it. It makes the box very special indeed.
I got my car back on Friday, and I already have one BMW 330 scalp.

This car is gonna get me in trouble.
