FYI, the 3.4 996 motor plugs right into the Boxster harness. Try a little tool call search and you will be surprised the experiments that have already been tried out for you by others.

Formula.. just for giggles how cheap is cheap on the boxtser with a blown engine? what year? is it an S or base. just curious. A guy at Pelican (Wayne) just bought a boxter for the 3.4 transplant as well if you are looking for fresh info.

Well it's not actually dirt cheap but it's a base 1999 car with a blown engine that I can get for 9K ... is that cheap??? It's through a family friend. he says if I am interested, he'll sell it to me for that much, if not then he'll try to get a little more for it elsewhere but the car is not running at the moment.

When I had to replace the motor in my '99, it cost me about $8700 total (with a 10% discount on some parts and labor for being a PCA member). So $9k plus another $9k is $18k, or about what it would cost to buy an early Boxster anyway. But the difference is you'll have a Boxster with a brand new motor with a 2 year warranty on it. (..the motor, not the car..)

If you go with a 3.4 or 3.6, you'll end up paying upwords of $15k. Still, total outlay of $24k isn't too bad for a hot rod Boxster. Hell, I paid more than that for my '01. (..granted, my '01 is LOADED and comes with a factory certified warranty..)

You are reading too many reports on sites like these where people tend to complain. Although, check out the other posting just made here about how reliable these cars are. I have a friend at a local dealer who tells me in all the years they have been working on Boxsters, they have only had to replace ONE rear main seal on a Boxster - and actually one particular year of 996s had it much worse. Yet, from these boards, you'd think every Boxster is spraying oil on the road! So, don't jump to something else so quickly.

Default Design Flaw?

I am interested in knowing what the design flaw is. Is the problem really a manufacturing flaw? A materials flaw?

Interesting. I'll have to double check with my friend. He might have been indicating how many showed the crank to be out of true or how many RMSs were replaced just because of the RMS, and not because the clutch was being done or something. How many blown engines in Boxsters have you guys replaced?

i REALLY USED TO DO A LOT OF RMS SEALS, SEEMS WAY MORE COMMON IN "WEEKEND" CARS AND THE WORST ARE SEASONAL CARS THAT SIT HALF THE YEAR.
I REALLY CANT REMEMBER THE LAST TIME I DID A 996/986 RMS

WE USED TO DO AMORE THEN A FEW OF THE EARLY CARS, 996S AND BOXSTERS, MOST OF THE BOXSTERS WERE DONE UNDER RECALL. NOW DAYS EVEN IN SUCH A HIGH VOLUM SHOP 200+ CARS A WEEK
IVE SEEN 2 IN THE LAST YEAR WITH DROPPED SLEEVES AND ONE WAS QUESTIONABLE BECAUSE THE GUY BACKED INTO A PARKING BLOCK AND SPLIT A HOSE AND DROVE HOME WITH NO COOLANT.

Jay Laifman, out of curiosity are you currently living somewhere down in Southern California? I see a green 911 like yours once in a while around Riverside/San Bernadino area. By chance are you going to school/work down here?

Yes and no. I'm in So. Cal., but at the Ventura/Los Angeles county line. Last time I was in Upland I was checking out Beck's operation and got a ride in his personal car which was an absolute beast. And, last time I was in San Bernardino, it was in a Sunbeam Tiger on a rally to Big Bear. So, I guess the guy you see is not me!

You can make up a harness for next to nothing for an electromotive.. Also if you can get a WRX motor with the wiring harness plug an AEM EMS into it and rout the wiring inside the car. Again no need for the stock computer and run the stock wiring harness. You would only need to splice a few wires for things like oil pressure warnign lights etc.. be pretty easy.

I have swapped a 1.8T VW motor into a MK1 Rabbit. We did it all with the 1.8T wiring and an electromotive. The 1.8T is drive by wire so we used a Acura Integra throttle body with a throttle cable like the rabbit used. Its was pretty easy really. The management system made it pretty well a trouble free swap. You just seperate chassis harness and engine to two different things.
I have always loved your posts. You are fearless. I wish we lived in the same city because I would buy you more than one beer for the insight on upgrades/maintenance.
