Default spark plugs

I'm planning on changing my spark plugs this weekend. I wanted Iridium, but was told sticking to the OEM( Beru) plugs would be best. I also read somewhere to stay away from Bosch. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

We have used the standard oem bosch plugs almost all of our engines. Never a problem, especially not in a boxster.

Hello,

I recently purchased from my local dealer six Beru 14FR7LDU spark plugs for my '99 Boxster. I plan to install them soon.

Should I check and, if necessary, adjust the gap? These plugs have what I believe would be referred to as twin electrodes. The Bentley manual says to use a 1.6 mm gap.

OR

Should I just plug and play?

Thanks,

Mark

Your 2.5 plugs have two side electrodes. The gap is .8 mm or .031".

I check them with a wire gauge.

Bosch or Beru, it doesn't matter. What does matter is the heat index. 7 is what's called for by Porsche. The ones you buy at the local auto shop are 6 and do not discipate enough heat from the plug head. Too much heat left in can give you pieces of platinum flying around in the cylinder. Just search the 928 forum (they also call for a 7 heat index) and you'll find some guys who found out the hard way.

In Mark's plugs, Beru 14FR7LDU, the 7 is the heat index. The part number is similar with Bosch except for the ones at the local auto parts store which don't tell you what it is (usually 6).

You're probably pretty safe with any plug, but are "probably" and "pretty safe" things you want when your engine is at stake?

I don't have the same kind of wire gauge that Tool Pants has. Mine has little loops of wire. They were good enough to check the gap pretty close.

I actually called the Porsche dealer and my local Porsche mechanic. Both told me to look at the plugs and make sure there were no obvious problems, but to just go ahead and install without need of checking the gap. The gap should already be set properly.

I find it interesting that the Bentley manual lists the gap as 1.6 mm. It is definitely a good thing that I didn't try to set the gap at that amount!

I would check the gap to make sure. I have had several BOSH and NGK plugs come out of the box with all different gaps. Some where close, others were not. You would think the 4 plugs in the box (was for a four banger), should at least be the same gap, even if off.

I have the Porsche shop and Bentley manuals. I have not gone through the Bentley manual yet. On what page is the Bentley gap specifications?

1.6 mm is for the 4 side electrode e-gas plugs. Good luck trying to measure the gap on those plugs.

This is really not important unless the plug has hit the ground or has been damaged in shipping.

I just got my parts order in today from Suncoast and just as Tool Pants pointed out in the Renntech link:

Beru Plugs part #999-170-207-91 @ $8.33/each (for a '00 S)

and...grrrrrr - just open the box for my clear rear tail lights and one is cracked and the other one is scratched.
