Default Does PSE need "valve cleaning"?

There's a question about the "6" generation PSE (996 and 986) that's been nagging me for a while now. I was told that there have been examples of PSE failure due to the fact that people do not use the on/off switch and always leave the exhaust valves open, thus exhaust residue accumulates and coats the valve system, thereby rendering it inoperable after a while.

The advice I was given: work the dashboard switch from time to time. My question is: how can this be since the PSE shuts off automatically from 50 to 80 and so the valves are always working aren't they? The only case in which I could see that it would be necessary to do the "valve cleaning" thing is if the exhaust mod has been done to avoid the 50 to 80 cutout...

Can any experts shed some light on this for me?
