Boxster ECU's ?

Wow. Don't know, but my guess is no. The '01 is eGas and the '97 is not. Also, the '01 has a different intake/resonance setup and uses a dual cat exhaust/emissions setup. You might be able to reflash, but they are very different. The '03+ 986 and 987 probably have more in common.

Well, for whatever you may wish to read into it, the DME part numbers are the same for '97 through '99, then change for '00 through '02, and then change again for '03 through '04. I believe from '02 to '03, there was a change from from Motronic 5.2 to 7.1 or something like that. My interpretation would be that if the older one could have been used in '00 - '02, then there would have been no reason for a different part number. Based on pretty significant differences like eGas, etc., I'd still vote it's not worth it unless you have a dead '01 ECU and a free '97 one lying around along with someone willing to flash it and be willing to pray that it works and that they didn't change the pinouts, signal levels, etc.

The 97-99 ECU has a 55-pin connector, the 2000+ uses a modular connector setup. So physically the older DME cannot be used. The code in the DMEs is also different, which is required for eGas and a difference in engine size....
