Default Boxster 3.4 tips?

I'd been thinking of buying a high-mileage 986 for cheap and doing an engine swap down the road, but during my web browsing I've come across a few cars that have already had this done that are up for sale. This will definitely been cheaper and easier than doing the same thing on my own, but what are some intelligent questions to ask about such cars? What do I look for in a good 3.4L install? This isn't something the 986 buying guides I've read covered.

The questions I would ask in addition to who did the work are:
1) who reprogrammed the DME
2) what upgrades were done to the 996 engine, mileage etc
3) what clutch, was the flywheel upgraded
4) what exhaust/headers are you running.

The 3.4 swap is pretty easy (I did it over the course of a long weekend) and there really aren't that many issues to deal with. Certainly simpler than other porsche engine swaps I have done in the past.

do you have to use the clutch and flywheel from a 996, is it just advisable? Is the 5 speed from a 2.5 ok or do you need the 6 speed from a 996? I am about to sell a 97 Boxster, but maybe I should rethink it. I know where there is a 996 just wrecked. I doubt the power train is damaged. Do you think buying a totalled car and spending more would work out better in the long run or do you really need to? Opinions appreciated

You use the clutch and flywheel from the Boxster, upgrade to a sport clutch, lightweight flywheel is optional, the 996 PP won't fit in the boxster bellhousing so it isn't used. The five speed works just fine. I don't know the differences with the 996 6 speed but since the boxster S 6-speed is different ( I believe) than the 996 version, I would guess it would be a bit of work to use the 996 one.
If you do it yourself the swap is pretty cheap, the only significant costs are the motor, DME reprogramming and the new exhaust ( which cost me almost as much as the motor). Not really much else needed in the way of parts.

See the writeup I posted here:

There is a link to a how to article I quickly wrote up in that post.

Todd, your Renntech post is great! Do you have a download link to the PDF file of your writeup? I tried downloading it but it seems to be inactive.

Sean,

The download works fine for me. The rennlist site is slow so maybe your browser is timing out.
If you like I can email you the file.

todd,

when are you gonna post an equally superb write-up on the driving impression of your 3.4L boxster?

The final drve on a 986 vs. 996 is reversed. If you put in a 996 transaxle in a 986 then you would have 6 reverse gears and and 1 forward. Could be fun....

Here's the car I was thinking of. I haven't contacted the seller, though.

Tool pants,

That really isn't that big of a problem, at least on the 915 box when you put it in a mid engine application you can simply flip the ring gear around. I would assume you could do this with the 996 trans, but maybe it isn't as easy as it is with the 915 transmission. Probably not worth the trouble as you could just use the 986S 6 speed.

Emanuel,

Car looks interesting and is priced pretty well and looks like they swapped in the Boxster S 6 speed. Consider it will cost you anywhere from $10-15k to do the swap so you would need to pick up a pretty cheap boxster to compete with that. If I was offered around $30k for my car I could probably be convinced to part with it so I don't think his asking price is out of line.
I highly doubt it has 350 hp though, unless it has some serious modifications that he isn't listing in the ad.
Good Luck,

Todd
