Default New top system with rigid window on old 986

Hi, I have a 1997' model and I need to change all the top system. So, it's very expensive and I am wondering if it's possible to adapt a the new system with the rigid window that equiped Boxster since 2003.

Anybody have an idea ?

I know the adaptable system from BAS but the window seems to be smaller.

thanks !

Sure.

Buy the 4 bow frame used on the 2003/4 with the glass window top which has a list price of about $6,500. Then buy the oem glass window top which is about $1,900. Your 1997 has a 3 bow frame and you cannot use the oem glass top designed for a 4 bow frame.

That is why no one has done it. Unless you can get the parts at a decent price from a wrecked 2003/04.

I also have a 1997 with the original top and if it needed to be replaced I would have to think long and hard not using BAS.

You can probabily get the window top system from dismantlers for a much cheaper price. This is going at 2k dollars.

It seems the less weight up high on a car, the better. One of the stated advantages of a horizontally opposed engine is the lower center of gravity. People look for non-sunroof 911's for the reduced amount of weight up high in the car, why would you really want a glass rear-window car? I know the "flex glass", um. plastique....marks the car as an older model............but, who cares?

I live in sunny S. Florida and have a 2000 S: well..the back window was looking fairly ratty and finally got a little crack so I took it to an upholsterer to get a new window sewn in. This guy told me how fortunate I was to not have the heat-sealed glass window in my top because when the heat seal dried and came loose the only thing to do was replace the whole top?? I dunno about that but I DO know that I have a freshly clear flex window in the back, and that's oh-so-nice.

Default Cabrioworld.com top

That glass window looks a bit smaller... or is it an optical illusion?

Also, since the original window folds in half, how does this one work???

The glass window doesn't fold in half and that's why it has to be smaller.
