Question Any info/experience with 1998 Boxster?

Sorry for the ; I just realized there was a 986 forum.

I've been thinking about picking up a Boxster like this one (configured from KBB). I know there were issues with this model in 1997, were they resolved by 1998 and do you guys know what they were? Any other advice? Also, this is my first post. Thanks to some guys from Off Topic for the referral.

Thanks for any info guys.

Thumbs up go for it

I purchased a 98 model 2 years ago with 38,900 miles. It had all the service records plus a print out from the dealer witch matched the invoices. I done the scheduled maintance myself and had the fault codes checked just after purchse. It has been 100% reliable. I just today discovered the begining of a tear in my rear window. I'll be replacing it asap. My Boxster stays inside so the next top should last the life of the car.

I would have a Porsche mechanic you trust do an inspection and if anything needs attention negatiate the repair in the selling price.

There are enough Boxsters on the market now that you can be VERY picky. That wasn't the case 2 years ago (at least not in my price range).

I had a 74 911S for 13 years prior to the Boxter and a 71 911T for 4 years prior to that. The Boxster is soooo modern compared to my 911's. I love driving it. I know a new 911 would be fantastic but I would only find myself in jail which is difficult enough to stay out of with the Boxster.

We've had our '98 for about 4 years. It's been a good car but I would look for a new S. Our car has been a bit high in maintaintence costs and the newer S's are easier to drive. We replaced the top due to a tear. The gearboxes that drive the top also had to be replaced. Due to a K&N air filter I had a few MAF problems. Just relaced the ignition switch. Also had to replace the battery. The early Boxsters are a bit low on HP and torque. Makes them a bit hard to get rolling from a dead stop. The car is generally easy to work on and there are tons of info available. It handles very well and is great at the track, very forgiving and no worrys about too much power.

I would go to the Porsche national web site and check around for used vehicles in your area with the extended 6yr-100Kmile warranty. You might have to fly to pick one up and pay cash, we are very happy with our '02 Carrera we purchased this way.

I have a 1997 Boxster and I have NEVER had any problems with the car, it has over 70K miles on it.

Default 98 boxster..

I have had a 98 since january 1998. I had a fluid leak when the car was new that took a few attempts for the dealer to correct. I also had to have the ignition switch replaced (also warranty). Other than this, the car has been trouble free (I only have 14k miles on it).
