Default Local 98 boxster - 12K miles, 23K - hit or miss

I have talked to this guy here in Oregon, he has a two owner garage queen, 98 986 with VERY low miles, like brand new.

Low Mileage 98 boxster

I'll be selling my Audi when I get back from holiday... I've been trolling here for awhile reading up on issues like RMS, so that no ones says:

12K is barely a shakedown, what else to look for on such a low mileage 7 year old car?

Wow...nice.

When I was looking at buying, I remember most of the problems of the early Boxsters show up in the first 30k miles, so I might actually be a little cautious of a really low mileage car that is going to be out of warranty. (I bought mine with 12.5k, but it was dealer certified with extended warranty) More than likely it'll be a great car, but I would at least have it looked at THOROUGHLY by a dealer and ask them to give an honest appraisal on whether or not they think this car will be a good one.

The pre-March '99 built cars have had problems with motor failures. Not enough to be alarming, but enough to where we all know it's a concern. RMS is possible with any year, but not as bad as some make it out to be. Be aware of clutch wear. Also check the top operation...it should raise or lower smoothly in about 13 seconds.

Best bet is to have a qualified dealer or mechanic give it a good look-see...

sounds like a good price if low miles is what you are after....Porsches are meant to be driven and a boxster won't be a "collector car" no matter how many miles. You might save yourself a couple grand with a little higher mileage car.

That's a nice car, I have the same color combo. Don't a lot of 98's have this engine failure problem? With low miles who knows.

Nice car, but for 5 to 6k more you could get a 2000 S model. They are far superior to the regular Boxster.
