Newbie request for info re 01 Boxster issues
The search function seems to be down so I have to ask the old fashioned way.
I'm tempted by a 2001 Boxster sitting on the local Jag/Volvo dealer's lot. It's showing 60,000km and looks very clean although I don't have its service history. I know there were some significant problems with early Boxsters but I don't know how early "early" is. In particular I'd like to know more about the rear main seal leak and cylinder liner slip problems. Is there anything else that I should check for?

IMO, the engine issues associated with Boxsters would compel one who is contemplating a used car to seriously consider a certified car with a warranty, otherwise, be prepared for any pain thay may come.

The slipped liner problems occured on earlier cars ('97-'99). The RMS issue is ongoing although the numbers seem to decrease every year. Additionally, the RMS problem seems to occur within the first 25-30,00 miles. In other words the seal seems to leak "early" or not at all.
I own a '00 986. My car has been the most trouble free vehicle I have ever owned.......period. I has not had a single problem in 4 years.
I would have a dealership check the car out. If it checks out buy it. I disagree w/the prior poster, in that I do not believe a warranty is absolutely necessary. With the exception of the RMS problem 986's after '99 have very few problems.
