Curiocity got the best of me so I decided to remove that boat anchor of a muffler and make my own exhaust. After reading up on the various aftermarket systems and the fact that non of the muffler only systems offer any performance gain, I decided to tinker with making a system of my own. Earlier today, I finished all the mock up pieces and tack welded it all together and took it for a spin and I must say that it sounds awsome in the top RPM's. I'll post more pictures of the entire undercide once I get out to the garage and get the car on the lift again. Oh, and I still need to find some cool tips.(maybe)
Anyway, I was excited about this 'home grown' mod so I thought I would share with you all.

Here's an undercarrage shot of the muffler delete system. I used standard exhaust tubung for this one and once I have it the way I like it, I will get some stainless bent and do the final version in stainless.(or maybe I could powdercoat this one). Learning as I go.
Driveability has been good so far, with the exception of a drone between 2 and 3 k, depending on how hard you are in the throttle and how much you have the motor lugged down. Higher RPM's sound awsome, more exotic than stock.

It's just a support, however, it would not be difficult to make one with a cross over tube.
That may be a good thing to try for #2 attempt. That may be the answer to some of the drone sound too.
So far I don't have much money invested, so making a few more is not a big deal.(more entertainment than anything)

That resonance seems to be a common complaint in many aftermarket mufflers, so I wasn't willing to part with that much cash for that potential problem.
So I took a different approach, and got the essentially the same result as you.
I got my hands on a cheap muffler off of an 'S', cut it open, and re-routed the plumbing inside to direct the flow of gases directly from the inlets to the outlets, (basically made it a straight-through, but I did leave a cross-over pipe in place so that there would be some wave cancellation, or so I thought.
Because I made all the cuts on the top, it looks like a stock muffler from the rear.
Just like yours, the sound is much beter than stock, but at cruise around the 2000-3000 rpm range where there is resonance or droning as you said.
I even re-opened it and provided a port inside where each side could open into a chamber, hoping that the expansion chamber would cancel some of the resonance. But it did not change anything.

I've cut open a couple of Boxster mufflers, one non S & one S. I cut out the 2 perforated inlet pipes. It's about 20-25% percent louder with no resonence thoughout the rev range.

Who's exhaust and does it dyno any extra HP. If so do you have a graph and maybe prices?

I found these nice oval tips at Autozone for a whopping 5 bucks apeace. Whad you think ? I think they look pretty good, and it helped with the drone sound. I still have drone from 2k to 3k but not near as hars as with the bare pipes. I believe it is due to the tips extending past the bumper a 1/2 inch. And the tone is more mellow now too.
