i figure gas isnt getting fully ignited in one or more cylinders? Car starts fine, but rough idle and some pops in exhaust. Looked for exhaust leaks, didnt find any. I tried changing MAF and cleaned throttle body, no change. Once idle settles it smooths out and runs fine.

 

Run some serious injection cleanser and take for a good long drive

What is the age and milage of your plugs and coils? Any code reader available?

 

plugs a couple years old. Not sure on coils. Code reader Foxwell, no codes.

 

did that. Car ran great. Started it this morning and now really strong gas smell and a tapping sound coming from engine bay. Tap sound is not rhythmic. Almost sounds like something is lose flopping around in there.

 

Can you record the sound so we can hear it?

It could be a bad coil and or an injector but the tapping sound could be a loose or broken head bolt also
time to take it to a tech

 

1998 80k km. On cold days, below 10 deg C, my idle is quite rough. After it warms up, it is fine. In the old days, I would have pulled the choke. Any suggestions ?

This is the same engine that won’t pull above 4500 rpm?

 

Yes. The rough idling was since I bought it at 43K km. I subsequent just warm it up on a cold day. Now on 80k km.
