Default Gas Gauge problem

This past week I let the Boxster get to about 1/4 tank ... Filled her up to about 3/4's (My guess added $20 in premium) and the gauge stayed at 1/4 tank ... Drove about 50 miles . The next day started her up ... now reading below 1/8 tank and light came on .... went and filled her up .... gas gauge is reading empty and light is on.

This happened once before , but after the next day I started her up and she read normal. Not this time

I seem to recall hearing there was a way to reset this ... anyone know ?

Thanks

Was the engine running when you filled up?

Porsche came out with a service bulletin recently for something like this type of problem for MY02 and newer. The float level sensor in the gas tank hangs up on a pipe when the fuel level is low.

TP,
You are correct. My '03 had this "issue". I don't have the bulletin ## handy, but there is a repair. I don't know the details, but it was not terribly time consuming (had it done while Box dropped off for the day).

Is it something I could fix myself ?

Mine is a 2002 I bought new ... still under warranty ... but I hate leaving my car with them for minor stuff. It's just an inconvenience and if easily fixed I'd rather fix it myself . Where might I access this float ... front trunk I'd imagine

Thanks

I had this problem. The dealer can fix in a day under warranty. It involves removing the tank sending unit. Not something to do yourself. My understanding is that they have to recalibrate the sender.

Default You can also try this

This happens sometimes in both of my cars whenever the tank is empty (low fuel light is on) and I only put in a few gallons. Some people may not like this but the last time it happened I disconnected the battery and when I hooked it back up the fuel gauge read properly (have you radio code on hand and reset the window one touch). I have had the fuel gauge sender replaced in both cars and the problem still happens.

My dealership worked the tank sending unit for months. Turned out to be the gauge. Replaced cluster. Good to go...

I was talking to one of the mechanics last week because he was replacing the instrument cluster on a 2003. They had fixed the float level sensor and there was still problems with the gauge. So that car got a new cluster.

As a bonus, I had added the 4-stalk OBC. The dealer ordered the cluster with the Dot Matrix OBC display knowing I had added the stalk. Nice guys!
