I repeat, a hard convertable top would mean NO TRUNK ROOM! This would be a Bad Thing. Regardless of who else has done it, I think the fabric top is both appropriate and functionally better.

"TRUNK ROOM" may be important to you BUT it is not important to everyone!! In my opinion a hard top would be better as it offers MUCH Better security for example.
I attended "Goodwood Festival of Speed" this weekend and I saw, for the first time the new Merc SLK - not a bad little car... The interior is a million times better than a boxster and that folding hard roof is really elegant.
So in my opinion the Merc gets a thumbs up.

I nhad my 03 SL500 with hardtop retractable and my current 996 cab as well as my 02 Boxster S. Personally, that is the only thing I missed from my SL500, hardtop retractable. Apart from that 996 Cab and even the Boxster S beats SL500 hands down in sport performance...
So, I welcome any idea of Porsche offering either Boxster or 997 with the hardtop retractable, who cares about the trunk space. Thats why we have SUVs for the daily drivers and we use thse porsches for weekend fun...

Doug, love that elaborate grocery layout. Sean, the donut-warmer shot is cute also... serves as reminder... no ice cream in the trunk... no eggs either... you might come home with a dozen chicks poppin' out... one chick in the passenger seat is enough.
I'll still take the original Boxster exterior styling, plastic window and all. A ragtop is a ragtop. Also, I never cared for the bumper cuts from 03 on. With 987 it seems like they took away lot of the nice subtle shapes… same thing with 997… they sort of have the overly-simple shape of a water-worn stone. Hardtop convertibles? Yuck, too much luxury!!! Love this quote from August Motor Trend on the Boxster S:
"The cabin doesn't seem luxurious for $59K, although you can feel the money in the performance hardware."
Funny, we knew this all along. And it's exactly the way I prefer it.

Does that make the Boxster a tax deduction?

Hi Guys,
Just went over to Germany for the Porsche factory visit, asked the same question, abt why no hard top convertible were available, Doug is right.
Due to the rear engine setup this was not possible.
BTW, the manufacturer of the convertible tops is now fully owned by Porsche.
Cheers
