Default Boxster Service Position / Engine Bay Access - Am I doing it right?

Howdy, I'm making my first foray into the engine bay to do a whole host of things. I have two questions:

1) What can be causing the gunkiness on my intake parts and how best to clean it?
2) Is there a better way to fold the soft top out of my way? I have an '04, so I have the glass window. I've seen videos where dudes just push there top out of the way and get to work on the engine, but mine doesn't seem to want to stay over. There's GOT to be a better way than this:

Thanks for any tips/tricks

You are not to far off the mark with the strut. There is a tether on the top (drivers side) that gets hooked to the top frame closer to the front of the car. I’ll see if I can find a picture.

For cleaning the engine, I use chemical guys all clean (diluted) - let it soak a bit, brush what you can ; then gently rinse without getting water where you don’t want it, then I follow up with chemical guys VRP (diluted). Spray on and allow it to dry - the plastic bits will look great.

Before (yep - I use a strut too, but because my top transmission is dismantled)

Perfect. I literally took a pic of that strap today and was gonna ask what the heck it's for.

Thank you!

Default '04 hood service position

Hi. I have an '04 with the same retaining strap. Any chance you could show a closer image of where it hooks onto at the front please? I haven't been able to hook it anywhere.

I went all the way forward to the little posts that go into the windshield frame/rollbar thing:
