Here is some info I posted several years ago.
"In 1997 the the ROW numbers started at 00061. US and Canada started at 20061. Brazil started at 29801. My 1/97 US is 21404. I ignore the 2 as all it tells me is that my is a US/CDN car for that market. I then take my 1404 but I subtract 61, so my car is the 1,343th car made for US/CDN. But then I think I should add to 1,343 all the ROW and Brazil cars that were made up to the date that my car was made, to get a total number of Boxsters made as of the time my car was made. As far as I can tell, my car left the line on 1/31/97.
In 1998-99 Mexico, but not Brazil, was included in
the USA/CDN numbering system.
For the 2.7 that came out in '00 the numbers stayed the same for ROW, but Mexico and Brasil were also included within USA/CDN.
For the 3.2 S that came out in '00 ROW started with 40061, and US/CDN/MEX/BR started with 60061."

Thanks guys,
Sadly I was barking up the wrong tree.
This digit simply forms part of the sequence or serial number.
Jeff, thanks for the added info. Interesting stuff.
