Default What Am I Looking At - Serpentine Belt Shredded

What is on the idler circled? I am assuming it is some sort of insulation that disintegrated and jammed between the idler and belt. Should I just yank the rest off the car's shell?
Thanks.

Just a little duck tape and it will be good as new.

I’m going though the same thing. I’ve got insulation that has deteriorated through time and heat breaking down everywhere. I suggest taking as much out as you can near the front of the engine.

I was toying with spraying it with adhesive. I think it is there for noise, not to keep heat out so I am with you.
I am trying to find the plastic part that is between the alternator and the shift cables. That is the piece that I must have messed up when I was man handling the alternator. I'm not sure if I really need it, but....

I can't see how it would. I'd take a careful look at the alternator, as it's loaded pretty heavily right after you start the engine.

That plastic piece I think serves as a guide for the shift cables and wiring harness to keep it away from the belt. Should be easy to find a used one. Not sure how easy it is to change w/ the engine in the car. They get old and brittle.

The sqeal noice at the thart up on the older Boxster is fairly common.
Take a look at this video and if the noice is same, the repair is easy by claning & lubing OR changing the starter:
