Not another IMSB thread. Theres metal in my oil, need a sanity check.

I made an oil filler tube. Go on 986forum.com and do a search for 'DIY oil filler tube'. Next time I would do it differently, a more flexible tube that doesn't need a bracket. But it can be done.

So I guess this is the source of the glitter?
When I first took the cover off, the bearing shaft was really sloppy kind of just dangling.
the ball bearings and the race are all pitted. The cage had metal shavings flaming off of it too.
Onto chain guides.

Bank 1 totally shot, you can see the chunks missing that ended up in the oil pan.
Bank 2 is another day.
It's been fighting me at every step, but if it drives even exactly the same as before it's going to be worth it. Some highlights of my wrenching adventure.
- PO never took care of an oil leak up top, the entire back half of the engine and trans were caked in grit & oil. 8hrs of scrubbing & degreasing.
- Even with my bolt buster, I broke 6 of 12 exhaust bolts at the headers, luckily with shank still exposed. So Ill attempt to weld a nut to the shank, and pray to the gods in Stuttgart.
- The factory tacked the cats together + rusty other bolts, so I've got to drill those to get them apart.
- When doing the upper oil filler tube I spent 4hrs+ pounding on the alternator mount bolt because the stupid medal bushing was seized. It's going back in slathered in anti-seize.
its been a fun journey, and the car is getting practically everything new "while I'm in there". Oil reports came back as well, engine's perfectly healthy from a microscopic wear perspective, and I'm feeling pretty confident the IMS is the only source of that ferrous metal.
I'm trying to be thorough with all my documentation. I'll put up parts list & torque specs (those took forever to find!) When Im done.

I used LN Engineering, FCPeuro, and Pelican parts for my parts. The clutch kit with bearing was about 300 cheaper at FCPEuro for some reason. Nice this is you can order the kit and if you don't need it you can return it no issues.
Here is what you will need to replace the variocam pads.
Required Parts
Gasket / holder for variocam selinoid

Timing chain pads
2 x https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/por...or-99610525300
Cam Shaft plugs, plus chain tensioner crush washers that you will need after removing the chain tensioners.
3 x https://lnengineering.com/products/t...-seal-set.html
Valve cover gasket sealer
2 x https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/osi...be-70-31414-10
Oil pan sealer

Scavenger oil pump gaskets at each end of the bank of cams
2 x https://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin...707-554-40-OEM
Optional Parts
While you are in there you could replace bank 1 chain guides if you wanted to. Bank 2 would require an engine drop.

You will have to remove the exhaust and the manifolds so you should replace the gaskets

If you variocam pads are broken and the chain is on metal you will need new chains. Hopefully not, but possible. If the solenoid body is still good might have marks on it from the chain and the source of your metal.

For tools you going to need all the standard 10,11,13,15mm sockets, 5mm and 8mm hex bolts, the "special tool" to compress the solenoid. here are the links to make your own for little money.

basically left hand rod and nuts to compress it so you can remove it from the cam chain.
Here are some videos that are pretty good but they leave some stuff out.

Im not an expert but if the variocam chain tensioner pads (plastic) wear to the point of breaking apart and the chain is running against the metal pad it should be replaced with the pads. If they are just warn but not broken I would guess you don't need top change the chain.
