Default Name that Sound!

Started after car was sputtering in low gear. Drove out of neighborhood. Car stalled couple of times. Then started making this sound.

Thank you for looking at this post and offering any suggestions. I don't race this car nor take it apart and re-build it. Just a guy who loves his Boxster and wants to keep it

1998 Boxster
160k miles
IMS not replaced.
Third Owner. Purchased @55k miles.

What transmission? Makes me think of old noisy automatic transmissions.

Trip Automatic. Thanks for response. Do transmissions make mechanical noise when engine is either in idle state or revved?

Did you have the air-conditioner on?
Maybe the compressor is on the verge of seizing?
Just a WAG......
Transmission very low on fluid?

Or power steering pump very low on fluid. Soulds similar when PS gets air in the sysytem due to not enough PS fluid.

Final Diagnosis in case this helps with other 160k mileage Boxster owners is the Trip tranny is shot. Mechanic removed the transmission, started engine and sound went away. Luckily we found a used '98 Trip and having it replaced. Doing the IMS at same time.
