I inherited an 03 Base Boxster (manual with 103k miles) for a short period of time and after numerous repairs sold it at cost to a fam member. I kinda liked it overall so i wanna go back to it. i'm asking the experts here what year is the most desirable for long term ownership? I don't mind a modded one. TIA.

Were you referring to 986 Boxsters or any year/model?

It really boils down to what you want to spend on a Boxster. If your budget in $20K or less, then you need to keep you eye on the 986 generation of Boxster, but as you experienced personally, there will be quite of bit of stuff that may need to be repaired. M9X and even 9A1 engines with Lokasil or Alusil can experience cylinder bore scoring, but the 986 is less prone mostly because of the piston composition. The 987 3.4L "S" model M97 engines are experiencing horrible reports of cylinder bore scoring. If you like the 987 design, I would recommend the base model 2006-08 Boxster which isn't prone to bore scoring and has the most robust IMS bearing. Those cars can be purchase for around $25,000 or less depending on miles and condition.
