Low Oil Level
I did my first oil change today on my 2000 2.7.I put 8 quarts back in to start with.Checked the dipstick after a few minutes and it read half full,at least that’s what I thought.Checked the gauge on the dash and it read the same.So I started it and let it run for 5 minutes and turned it off. When I checked it again after a while it was reading very low on the gauge,I think only 2 bars. It’s like I only put a quart or two in.
Is this normal?Everything is dryI don’t want to overfill it.

Three Wheelin'
Put in 8 quarts, STOP. That's plenty of oil to run the motor, always check the gauge after the car has sat overnight on a level surface.
One you start it you have 2 to 3 quarts that take a long time to drain back.
This works on my 996.. First start on mine was with 8 quarts..

I’ll do that thank you.I was concerned not only for the level but through the passenger grill I heard a noise that I didn’t notice before and it’s got me worried.Almost like a ticking lifter noise but a deeper sound.

So,oil level is good.I took off the front access panel to the engine compartment to see if I can pin point where the noise is coming from. It’s coming from the front of the motorSounds like one of the pulleys maybe loose but everything appears to be tight and no wobbling.Or maybe it’s inside the case behind the pulley?I need to get a stethoscope.
Any thoughts you guys might have would be appreciated.

When you run the engine without a belt, do not drive it, but keep engine running that few minutes that you can confirm if the noice is still there or not.
Also, when the engine is running without the cabine cover behind the seats, keep everything away from the open hatch (clothing, fingers, tools, etc).

No belt no sound…While the belt was on it seemed like it was the power steering pump.Only after the idle came down from initial warm up.No leaks,no laboring when steering and steers fine

That's what I did.
Gravy job.

Also, you're saying something that's confusing me. Your post leads me to believe that if a car had 1 quart of oil in the engine it would show up as 1 bar, 2 quarts, 2 bars etc. Is that true? Typically something oil level gauge is centered around 1 quart low being the lowest bar, half a quart low would be mid level on the bar etc.
