Default Hum or whirr noise while off?!

I recently bought a 2003 Boxster base a little over a week ago.

When I sit in the car long enough for the interior lights to turn off (without the key in the ignition) I can hear a small hum or whirr noise similar to a countdown egg timer from the front dash area. When I open the glove box wide enough to turn on the light in the glove box, the whirr noise stops (and then immediately starts again when I close the glove box).

Is this normal? It sure does not seem normal. Any ideas of what could be causing the noise?

It might be the HVAC unit air temp sensor that is located on the upper right dash. It pulls in cabin air to measure and regulate the temp. Why it shuts off when you open the glove box seems odd.

Then again I might be completely wrong. It wouldn't be the first time.
