Hello, I had the shifter cable come out of the thing at the tranny. Not the ball joint but the actual cable came out of ball joint.
Is this an easy fix? It looks like it would be. For the life of me I can’t get the ball joint off of the tranny to try and reattach the cable. Seems like this would be a five min job for someone more savvy then I.
Thanks for the tip, I will try and find some small pry bars. Have you seen this happen before? I assume once i get that piece off, I can loosen the hex nut and reinsert the cable?
You are going to have to replace the entire cable assembly. Not hard, but a pain to do. There are multiple youtube videos on doing this. Not exactly common, but it isn't rare either.
Also, pry away the safety clips to get it off the ball joint, Shouldn't need a pry bar to do it.
Oof, I was hoping to put off replacing the cables for a bit longer. It's weird that they sell a replacement end for the cable for the 911 but not for the Boxster... Thanks
I have read in several forums that cable swaps are a pain and should be done by a "professional". I am by no means a mechanic but I am fairly good with my hands so I am not afraid of taking this on. I would just like to avoid getting in over my head and the added frustration.
How long should it take do you think for a first timer?
Plan for a full weekend..with the proper tools. Honestly, this is one that might just be better off having the dealer do. dont know the book time but they have the tools which means you wouldn't have to buy it so it might just be quicker & cheaper in the long run. can't imagine it is more then 4 hours for the dealer to do.

It's all in the math.
How much will it cost to tow to the dealer... or your indie mechanic? If you can tow it yourself... better yet.
Attempt the repair. If you fail it... vcan't get it right... to the dealer/mechanic.
You're no less off than if you hadn't attempted the repair.
Good points. I have AAA so its not an issue to tow it and in fact, its stuck in 3rd so its still drivable as long as no starts up hill or need to go in reverse.
I am however finding a bit difficult for complete instructions for a 986... Any suggestions appreciated.
