Question Cam cover

So I am going to remove the camshaft cover to examine the guide rails and try and diagnose the reason for my deviation. Never done anything like this before. is it possible to do inside the car and still be able to see the internals or should i pull the engine? Do I need to drain the oil first? I bought the locking tool kit so I'm good there, but I would appreciate some tips from people who know anything or have done this before, thanks
I have a 2001 2.7L 5 speed btw

Maybe, but I wouldn't want to try.
It's amusing enough out of the car!

Worth noting that the cam covers are also the cam (half bearing) retainers.
