Took a drive in a couple 986 STDs this week. Both looked clean as hell, both around 12K. 1st wasn't my color and owner didn't want me to push it at all. 2nd one was speed yellow and although not my favorite, it still puts a grin on my face. Owner had it as a project car replacing door and rear quarter panel, then having it pro repainted for $5K. Also had the IMS (LN), clutch, and rear seal replaced for another 4K by the local Porsche dealer, who also did a full vehicle check at the time (all in 2020). Thinking of having that dealer do a PPI unless y'all have other places in Plymouth MI area you recommend. Seems to have enough power to keep me happy, even being a non-S. And such a sweet sound she makes. Oh, it's a 2002 with 33K miles.

Second one sounds promising especially with all the pricey recent work that was done. Does it have the LN Engineering sticker/tag (https://lnengineering.com/ims-lookup.html)? I have an arctic silver 986 with 35k miles now... always wished that it was speed yellow or guards red but it was too nice to pass up when I came across it.

Hey Andy, I'm not sure about a sticker but the box the new bearing came in is in the trunk, with the like-new original it replaced. Also have the receipt from the dealer with the details noted.
Guards Red isn't for me, my favorite is Carmana Red, (a dark metalflake) with Cobalt Blue next. No problem with the yellow, and though I'm not fond of stripes, the "Porsche" stripe at the bottom looks right too.

The box and documentation from the dealer is reassuring. I guess all that's left to do is get a PPI done. Have you tried reaching out to the local PCA region with regards to recommended independent shops for the PPI?

I had a base 986, then went to a 987S, and am now back to a Speed Yellow 2004 base. Can't beat the value combined with fun to drive. Yes, it's fast enough for you.

Sorry to hear about that. It really seems like a tough market when people are willing to forego PPI's on 986 Boxsters. Good luck with the next one. May have to up the game by not asking for PPI. Or, consider putting a deposit down pending PPI. I guess all this is 20/20 hindsight but maybe a PPI isn't necessary if there is documentation of major repairs. No doubt there are varying opinions on this issue. If it's any consolation, I think a lot of us have experienced something similar (myself included). The good news is that another one will come along and maybe in your preferred color.

A ppi is only as good as the person doing it and many things they may find you can do yourself. A Porsche is just a car so look for issues that affect all cars. A ppi is good if you dont have the ability to get under the car but really you could do a ppi yourself with a test drive & a good exam of the car.
The market is tough right now. Cars are selling an average of 30% more then normal. I have sold a few in the past few months that went for almost twice what they would usually go for. If you find one you like, dont let it out of your sight. Tell the seller you will take it and then go straight to the bank to finalize the deal. Good thing with doing it that way you can then also do a bill of sale & get it notarized if it's a person selling the car vs a dealer.
Not sure where you are located but know someone who might be selling the 01 Seal Gray one soon.

I would rather do a good test drive & apply PPI funds to fix-up the car as I see fit. But I have had my 986 for 18 years & do all the work on it.
