Default 986 Boxster top not working

Hey guys,
I’ve got a 1997 Boxster with the top not going down or up. Many threads and posts on this subject but haven’t found the solution to my issue.

The relay is new. The parking brake light comes on when applied so that’s not it. The micro switch at the top latch is working because the windows come down when that applied. When I press the button for the top to retract I can hear the motor trying to operate but it quickly stops.

When the button is pressed I can see the cable on the passenger side move or buckle but the cable on the driver side is still. Does this sound like it would be a failure of the plastic gear in the transmission on the driver’s side?

Anybody ever experience this or a transmission gear failure?

Thanks

If the cycle starts, then the switches aren't your problem.

Despite the seeming complexity of the movement of the top and clamshell, the mechanism itself is actually pretty simple and easy to understand. When I was having trouble with my tops, the solution was to check for obvious problems, like sockets popped off of *****, and then to observe what was happening on both sides to see what was different. If nothing appeared obvious to me, I would probalby watch a couple of YouTube videos that show how the top is supposed to move, and then see what's different in my car.

Sorry I can't give you anything better, but I don't recognize the problem you're describing. If you can get a better understanding of what's going (or not going) on, post again.

I realize this question is off-topic, but how do you get the list of your current and past cars in the footer of your posts? I would like to do that. Thanks!

It's part of the 'Signature' in the User Control Panel.

Go into the User CP.
Then "Edit Signature"

Maybe that's not available if you aren't a paying member?
You might want to consider paying a few bucks to join up regardless.

Cheers.
