Hello! and paint chip question
Hey, all. I just joined Rennlist a few moments ago, and, after looking the joint over, realize I should have joined long before. I love my 2010 Boxster. Probably the best use it gets is driving through the mountains, usually with a pal who engineers motorcycles. Top down, challenging curves, and a leisurely drink at the end in a great pub.
So here's the issue that sent me online to do some research, and that finally brought me here. (I searched the forum for a solution without much luck, but my apologies if the issue is covered in a thread I couldn't find.) My driver-side door was recently scratched, and insurance paid for what should have been a terrific paint job from a local shop. The job was certainly expensive. Two weeks later I noticed a chip on the edge of the door, on the spot where, when opening the door, the edge would touch something. I have no idea when it happened, though I'm happy to admit that, careful as I always try to be, I may have opened the door against something. (I always open the door gently.) However, in ten years old the paint has never chipped, I'm guessing because it's chip-resistant from the factory. The shop wants to "touch it up," which means simply covering the spot with a bit of paint. I am trying to figure out whether I should ask for some better solution to this issue. My questions are these: 1. Is the factory paint job chip-resistant? 2. If so, can someone point me to the documentation that verifies this? 3. Should the body shop be able to reproduce this resistance? 4. If there is no other recourse, should a get the edge protected in some other way? There seem to be some aftermarket solutions (a "3M Door Edge Protection Film," for example). 5. Or should I simply accept the touch-up and have done with it? Thanks for any help, and I'm really looking forward to exploring this site more. (Some of the pics are incredible.)
(Edit: It suddenly occurs to me that maybe there's another discussion forum in which I should have posted this issue. I have to admit that when I saw the Boxster forum, I just got a little excited at possibly meeting a few of you. But if it seems appropriate, please move this to somewhere better.)

When you paint an area on an existing car does the paint get cured the same way the original coat did at the factory? No. The factory has the advantage of no interior or wiring or etc being installed so they can cure it in an oven. The body shop can't.
Touch up is about the best they can do.
