I've got a friend shopping for a 2000 Boxster and I'm wondering if anyone can quote what the wholesale value is for a sub-20k mile standard 986. We're trying to get an idea how much haggling room there is; though the asking price is ~$27,000, the world seems to be crawling with nice Boxsters so I'd think it's a buyer's market.

You need to do your homework on what sales are/ads are in the local chicagoland area.

I found boxsters to be cheaper in Miami, LA and Dallas (probably due to the number sold and in the market) yet higher in chicagoland.

Check www.kbb.com and www.edmunds.com for chicagoland zip code value.

Check ebay sales history..

Don't forget the nicer cars with documented service histories command more dollars. Also Porsche is dramatically cutting production of new Boxster's (Cayenne production and 997 production are at fault), so used ones are demanding more at auction, and thus higher resale lately.

Though I'm in Chicago, the friend looking for one is in KY. The cars we looked at were in Louisville to be exact, but we've both thought of heading down to Miami if the pickings are better.
